People coming to Istanbul usually want to see the major sights of ancient history during their stay in this beautiful city. Who wouldn’t want to see a 1500-year-old Byzantine church or an Ottoman mosque that has been active for over 400 years? While wandering around in the old town with my guests, we talk about history, culture, fashion, architecture, people and, of course, city legends. This wide range of topics gives context to so many of the city’s amazing sights. I like to help travelers get an idea about today‘s cosmopolitan city along with its background, which allows them to form a picture of Istanbul in their mind to take them back their home.
What many first-time visitors in Istanbul don’t realize is that while the old sights and history of the city are a large part of what makes it great, it has a fascinating modern history as well. As everything changes with time, so has Istanbul. Even the name of this city has changed many times, most recently from Konstantiniyye to the Istanbul of today. To discover some of the city’s transitions over the last 200 years, you can visit the special exhibition taking place at the Pera Museum, which will last until April 1st of this year.
